Exercises recommended by the Illinois Neurological Institute:
Full Grip
This exercise will improve your grip strength. Hold the putty in the palm of your hand and squeeze your fingers into the putty like you are making a fist. Roll the putty over and around in your hand while exerting as much pressure as possible against the resistance of the putty.
Fingers Only
This exercise will strengthen your fingers and improve joint flexibility. Hold the putty in the palm of your hand at the base of your bent fingers. Keep your palm open and squeeze the putty with just your fingertips. Press your fingertips into the putty then fold it over and repeat the squeeze.
Finger Spread
This exercise will strengthen the muscles in your hand responsible for finger extension. Spread the putty into a thin pancake shape and place it on a table. Bunch your fingers and thumb together and place them on the putty. Press your fingertips into the putty and spread out your fingers and the putty with as much force as possible.
Finger Scissor
This exercise will strengthen your fingers individually. Roll the putty into a ball shape and place it between your index and middle finger. Squeeze your fingers together in a scissor-like motion. Repeat the squeeze between each pair of fingers.
Scissor Spread
This exercise will improve your ability to spread your fingers apart. Wrap the putty around the top of your middle and ring finger while they are together. Spread your fingers apart with as much force as possible. Repeat the scissor spread with each pair of fingers.
Finger Pinch
This exercise will strengthen and improve your ability to pinch and pick up objects between your thumb and fingers. Roll the putty into a ball and pinch it between your thumb and index finger. Repeat the pinch with each finger separately and finally with all four fingers at once.
Finger Dig
Place putty in the palm of the hand and dig the fingers into the putty until they press through to the palm of the hand and form a fully clenched fist. Release the fingers, roll the putty over to reshape and repeat.
Finger Extensions
Bend one finger into the palm of hand. Wrap putty over tip of finger. While holding the putty with the other hand extend finger to a fully opened position with as much force as possible. The degree of resistance is controlled by the thickness of the putty held over the fingertip. Repeat with each finger.
Thumb Extension
This exercise will strengthen your thumb extensors. Loop the putty over the end of your bent thumb and hold the loose ends of the putty in your hand. Press your thumb against the putty to fully straighten it with as much force as possible.
Thumb Press
This exercise will strengthen your thumb flexors. Hold the putty in the palm of your hand. Press your thumb toward your little finger and into the putty until it is pressed completely through to your palm.
Wrist Rotation
Grip putty tightly in one hand. Rotate the wrist in a circular motion, first in one direction, then in the opposite direction, while pressing into the putty with as much force as possible.
Wrist Extension
Rest the forearm on a table or arm of a chair allowing the wrist to hang down over the edge. Grip the putty with the fingertips while holding in place with the other hand. Raise wrist up to its full extension with as much force as possible.
